Create a new product template and page template

Instead of using the same template for all your products and pages, you want to showcase your store with various templates to prevent your site from being boring, but still do not know how to do it? No worries, this article will give you step-by-step instructions on creating new templates and assigning any products/pages to these templates.

Create a new product template

    1. On your Shopify Admin dashboard, click Online Store > Themes.
    2. On the Themes page, choose Be Yours theme and click on the theme's button Customize.
    3. Next, you click on the top navigation bar and select the tab Products in the Templates.
    4. You will see all created templates for your products listed here. To create a new product template, you click the Create template button at the bottom.
    5. Next, insert the new template's name. In the field Based on, select one of the existing templates which you find most similar to your new template. The selected template will be duplicated for your quick customization.
    6. Start to customize your new template with sections or blocks as per your preference. For instance, I create a new template called "product-with-image-banner" based on the Default product and add a section Image banner on the top. Then, click the button Save to complete the new template design.
    7. After the new template is created, you need to assign products to this template by returning to your Shopify Admin dashboard and selecting the tab Products. Next, you click on the product to be assigned and in the product's setting window, you navigate to Online store > Theme template on the right column and choose the newly created template in the drop-down list (it is product-with-image-banner in the example). Finally, click Save.
    8. As the result, the new template is successfully assigned to the selected product. Do the same for other products to which you want to assign this template. You can create as many templates with different elements as you want to showcase your products.

Notes:

  • Default product template is automatically applied for products if you do not assign them to a specific template.
  • The theme template drop-down list in step 7 above is only available for Live theme according to Shopify's requirement. It means that if you are using the trial theme, Default product is the only option and you cannot choose the newly created theme to assign to the product.

Create a new page template

To create the new template for pages, the steps are similar to the process of creating a new product template above. You will need to:

    1. On your Shopify Admin dashboard, click Online Store > Themes.
    2. On the Themes page, choose Be Yourstheme and click on the theme's button Customize.
    3. Click on the top navigation bar and select the tab Pages.
    4. Some ready-to-use page templates such as faq, sidebar, etc. are available for you to choose from. To add a new page template, you click the Create template button at the bottom.
    5. Next, insert the new template's name. In the field Based on, select one of the existing templates which you find most similar to your new template. The selected template will be duplicated for your quick customization.
    6. Customize your new template with sections or blocks as per your preference. For instance, I create a new template called "page-with-header-video" based on the sidebar template and add a section Video on the top. Then, click the button Save to complete the new template design.
    7. After the new template is created, you need to assign pages to this template by returning to your Shopify Admin dashboard and selecting the tab Pages. Next, you click on the page to be assigned and in the page's setting window, you navigate to Online store > Theme template on the right column and choose the newly created template in the drop-down list (it is page-with-header-video in the example). Finally, click Save.
    8. As the result, the new template is successfully assigned to the selected page. Do the same for other pages to which you want to assign this template. You can create as many templates with different elements as you want to apply for various pages.

Notes: Assigning a new page template has some notes which are similar to assigning a new product template as follows:

  • Default page template is automatically applied for pages if you do not assign them to a specific template.
  • The theme template drop-down list in step 7 above is only available for Live theme according to Shopify's requirement. It means that if you are using the trial theme, Default page is the only option and you cannot choose the newly created theme to assign to the page.
